Assistant Professor of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics invites applications for a tenure-track position in Pure Mathematics at the Assistant Professor level starting September 1, 2008.
A Ph.D. or its equivalent in Mathematics is required. Candidates should exhibit a strong commitment to teaching and solid research potential. All research areas will be considered although we are primarily interested in hiring a person whose research focus lies in analysis, algebra, topology, algebraic or arithmetic geometry. Responsibilities include graduate and undergraduate teaching, directing undergraduate and/or graduate student research projects/theses, and establishment of a program of independent research in mathematics. The teaching load for research faculty is two courses per semester, typically a division of Calculus and an upper level course.
The University of Maine is the primary graduate institution of the State of Maine. The Department offers BA and MA degrees in mathematics and statistics and is in the process of developing a Ph.D. program in mathematics/statistics. The department's web site can be visited at www.math.umaine.edu
